Letters received by Alexander B. Johnson of Utica, N.Y., including many written from members of his wife’s family, the Adams family of Quincy, Mass. Johnson was married to Abigail Louisa Smith Adams, the granddaughter of John and Abigail Adams. Correspondents include John, Abigail (one letter), John Quincy, and Thomas Boylston Adams and Susanna Boylston (Adams) Clark (later Treadway). The collection also contains letters pertaining to Johnson’s position as the president of the Utica branch of the Ontario Bank, his legal studies (particularly in letters from John Adams), and his speaking engagements for the Utica Lyceum and other local societies. Additional correspondents include Jacob Brown, DeWitt Clinton, John Greig, Adrian van der Kemp, and Ann Masters. |
