Persistent Stitches I, [textile] 2016-2018. |
| Description: |
1 quilt : cotton fabric and batting, felt, thread, embroidery floss, aluminum bottle cap discs, epoxy stickers, paint, ink, graphite, adhesive ; 31.2 x 106 cm. |
| Biographical/Historical Sketch: |
During the 2016 presidential campaign the artist began to cross-stitch Hillary Clinton’s campaign logo, using the colors of the women’s suffrage movement, to document what she hoped would be the historic election of the nation’s first female president. After the election she set aside her original design, unfinished. She later incorporated it into this work, Persistent Stitches I, as the second of five quilted windowpanes “looking out over past actions and future possibilities.” The words and images on the vines entangling the panes represent ways the people have sustained themselves and their communities during this “time of brokenness.” The new growth represents our commitment to work towards a more equitable and sustainable future, incorporating the abandoned cross-stitch panel into a “dense, living tangle of collective social justice labor.” See Crafting Democracy, Fiber Arts and Activism, Juilee Decker and Hinda Mandell, eds. (Rochester, New York: RIT Press, 2019). |
| Scope: |
Quilted and embellished wall hanging with base of yellow cotton with brown linear design of bees, birds, and stars. Bordered on all sides by contrasting geometric blue and white cotton fabric. Five evenly-spaced square panels occupy the center of the piece. Four are filled with log cabin pattern in mauve, muted floral prints, and the blue and white border print cotton fabric. The fifth, second from left, is a cross-stitched version of Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign logo of an H with crossbar arrow, pointing right superimposed on a heart. The logo is rendered in mauve, gold, and white (the colors of the women’s suffrage movement) while the heart is stitched in gray, and left incomplete. An embroidered green vine unites all the panels and additional embroidered green foliage appears in two panels at the right of the banner. Sixteen aluminum discs enclosing images and words are attached to the quilt at various points. Eight suspension tabs of crimson felt are sewn along upper edge of back for hanging. |
