Scope: Three daybooks and one ledger kept primarily by Leander Moody, tanner and tavern keeper of Northampton, Mass. Moody worked with different partners, including his brother-in-law David Edwards and Edwards’ sons-in-law Horace Wright and Benjamin B. Hoxie, and the business operated under various names. The three daybooks document the transactions of Edwards & Moody’s and Leander Moody & Co., 1826-1835; Moody & Wright, 1830-1839; and Moody & Hoxie and Moody, Hoxie & Co., 1835-1848, 1876. Included are accounts for the purchase, dressing, and tanning of leather, calfskin, and sheepskin; hemlock and oak bark; freight and labor; and other items. The ledger, 1827-1850, contains cash accounts related to the tannery, as well as Moody’s accounts with various individuals for the sale of potatoes, butter, meat, and other foods; wood; labor; and other items.
